Tested for the realities of Western gardens
Plant Select began in 1997 as a collaboration among Colorado State University, Denver Botanic Gardens, and horticulture professionals. The nonprofit program identifies and promotes plants suited to landscapes from the high plains through the intermountain West.
The program helped me understand that a resilient Colorado garden does not have to be an all-or-nothing argument between “native” and “ornamental.” Thoughtfully chosen plants can conserve water, survive our climate, support wildlife, and still be beautiful.
Why it matters here
Plant Select gave me a practical bridge between ecological intention and homeowner reality. Their work helps ordinary gardeners choose plants with a much better chance of surviving the first season without requiring ritual sacrifice to the irrigation gods.
Some Plant Select plants are Colorado or regional natives. Others come from similar dry climates. The label describes performance and selection—not necessarily native status—so this site shows both labels when both apply.
